Introduction:
Komala Menon (1928-2024) was an early heroine of Malayalam cinema. She is best known in the film industry as Prem Nazir's first heroine. Initially, she acted in only five films, but she quit acting. Komalam made her debut in Malayalam with the film Vanamala, which was based on the theme of the forest. Later, she acted in a few films like Atmashanthi, Sandehi, and Newspaper Boy. She became even more famous when she acted in Prem Nazir's first film and Komalam's third film, Marrigal. It was in this film that Prem Nazir played the lead role for the first time under the name Abdul Khader. She acted with Miss Kumari in Atma Shanti, which was shot in Chennai. P. Newspaper Boy, directed by Ramadoss, was a 1955 experimental film by a group of college students.
Early Period:
Komala Menon was born as the fifth child of Pankajaksha Menon, an employee of the Public Works Department, and Kunhiyamma, a teacher, at Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district. Her father died when she was five years old. Later, she grew up under the care of her uncles.
She studied at St. Teresa's English Convent School in Neyyattinkara and was invited to act as a heroine in the film 'Nalla Thanka' through her sister-in-law Kaiyalam Krishnan Nair, who worked as a theatre manager. Komalam, who was a member of an orthodox family, had to give up the venture temporarily after facing strong opposition from his relatives.

Soon after, she was invited to act as the heroine in the film 'Vanamala', which was based on the theme of the forest. She starred in the film despite stiff opposition. She played the role of the heroine's younger sister in her second film, Atma Shanti.
Later, she acted as Prem Nazir's first heroine in the film 'Marumakal'.
She played the female lead opposite MGR's brother M.G. Chakrapani in the film 'Sandeham', which was directed by Nagoor in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. During this time, various film production companies, including Maryland, came up with invitations to act in their films. He was invited to the film Bhaktavijaya, which was shot in Maryland, but could not act in it.
She retired from acting at the age of twenty-one as she could not survive the stiff opposition from the society and her relatives. After a long time, she tried to make a comeback to acting and appeared in small roles in a few films like 'Aradhana' and 'Aa Girl Nee Ainthithi'.

Farewell to Indian actress Neyyattinkara Komalam, age 97:
